JSA Diplomat Program

In the summer of 2010, JSA in conjuncction with CET Academic Programs, will be launching its first international summer school for high school students in Beijing, China.  The JSA Diplomat Program will be limited in size and open to recent graduates of the Junior Statesmen Summer School. Students who are interested in applying for the program can do so at the JSA Portal.

The program will be open to graduates of any Junior Statesmen Summer School and will offer a course in Chinese History and Government and an introductory Chinese Language course.  Special activities include a day hike along an ancient section of the Great Wall, a trip to historic city of Xi'an, service learning opportunities, a cultural exchange program with local Chinese students, and, of course, an interactive guest speakers program.  An optional 3-day trip to Shanghai at the end of the program allows students to see the modern, economic capital of China, as well as to learn more about China’s colonial past.

JSA students at Summer School were excited about the new program.  "I have always wanted to learn more about Chinese culture after studying it briefly in school.  Now, I can have the opportunity to study the history, culture, and language while at a Chinese University," said Kourtney Bradshaw.  "And to top it off, the program will be co-sponsored by a program I have come to love, JSA!"  Tazin Khan was also thrilled by the announcement.  "Here at JSA, we're so focused on American politics and what is going on here.  It is so amazing that JSA is broadening its' horizons and going to China!"

The JSA Diplomat Program will be hosted at Capital Normal University (CNU), one of China’s top 100 key universities located in the western part of the city. With its nearly 10,000 undergraduate students, the campus offers a vibrant community of students from both Beijing and other parts of China. All JSA Diplomat students live in a brand new, state-of-the-art foreign students’ dormitory with a US roommate.

The JSA Diplomat Program will be managed by an on-site Resident Director who speaks fluent Chinese, has lived or studied in the local city, and is thoroughly trained by CET and JSA.CET and JSA bring over 100 years of combined experience in the summer enrichment and study abroad communities.  CET Academic Programs is a private study abroad organization based in Washington that has been designing and administering innovative educational programs abroad since 1982.  CET is known for high academic standards, innovative approaches to teaching and careful student management.

Space is Limited

In its inaugural year, the JSA Diplomat Program will be open to a limited number of students. Preference is given to students who have previously attended a summer school and who had a 'B' average or better, but students who have not attended in the past but who have outstanding grades and a strong interest in China will be considered, giving preference to those who have Chinese language skills already. Students graduating from high school in 2010 - 2013 are eligible to apply.

“ The other students are what made
Summer School so special. I have never
before been around people who were so
consistently witty, insightful, curious
and knowledgeable about world affairs.”
