Former Colorado Congressman Tom Tancredo recently sparked controversy
in his speech at the National Tea Party Convention calling for a civic
literacy test for voters. Supporters view a civic literacy test as a
necessary check against the uninformed impulses of the masses. Critics
view a civic literacy test for voters as undemocratic and
discriminatory. What do you think?

RNC Chair, Michael Steele and other prominent Republican leaders have
called upon Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid (D-NV), to resign for
remarks he made during the 2008 Presidential Election in which he
stated that the country was ready to embrace the candidacy of Barack
Obama because he was “light skinned” and had “no negro dialect unless
he wants one.” Senator Reid expressed regret for his “poor choice of
words” and issued an apology for his “improper comments.” President
Obama accepted his apology and considers the matter closed.

Next Tuesday, September 8 President Obama will be speaking to students at an Arlington County, Virginia high school with hopes that the back-to-school speech will be viewed by students across the nation. Supporters of the speech and its educational value are able to visit the U.S. Department of Education website for classroom activities while opponents believe that watching the speech in classrooms is indoctrination. |

On Tuesday
May 26, 2009,
President Obama nominated the first Latino American woman to the United States
Supreme Court. Nominated to replace current Justice David Souter who will be stepping
down in June, Sonia Sotomayor currently serves on the Second Circuit of the
United States Court of Appeals. |
