We can't have economic ties with China, and then all of a sudden have a feeling of moral superiority when it comes to the Olympics! If we boycott the Beijing Olympics, then we must stop trade with China as we have done with other communist nations.

If the US stopped trade with China the effects would be detrimental. Besides Tibet has planned acts of terrorism on China; and if they left China then there economy would be in big trouble.

I understand that if the U.S. stopped trade with China there would be detrimental effects. I'm just stating how hypocritical it would be if we actually boycotted the Olympics but continued trade. Also, the only reason Nixon started trade with China was because of the Cold War, and now it seems that a new Cold War is starting with China. I personally feel that if we stopped trade with China it would send a strong message to the rest of the world that we aren't going to tolerate oppressive regimes. Also, we would be able to have safe children's toys again!

I would love to cut off trade with China, but it simply isn't plausable. China is becoming the major economic superpower in the world, and if US cut off trade with it, we would loose great amount of power in the world. I do agree that it would be greatly hypocritical for us to boycott the beijing olympics, and that China needs to let Tibet become its own country.
