JSA prepares teen for political life

THE DEBATE has ended, and the final votes are in. Legislators gather together and talk anxiously, eagerly awaiting the announcement of the bill's fate. This isn't the United States Senate, however: It is the Junior State of America (JSA).

Students involved in the JSA say that if one plans to pursue a career in politics, the 75-year-old organization is a good place to start.

Students Ready to Debate

It was another mountain in life to climb. Instead of using his feet to hike, Isaiah Harper used his words.

At first he was nervous — just like many other members of the Springfield High School Junior State of America organization preparing for their debates at an upcoming mini convention.

“At first I was anxious. Then I felt like I had just accomplished something huge in my life. I was high on life,” said Isaiah, a senior at SHS.

Along with Isaiah, many members of JSA say they have felt this sense of accomplishment and are ready to feel it again during Saturday’s convention, hosted by the SHS and Sacred Heart-Griffin JSA members.

CCHS principal gets in a sticky situation

The school’s Junior State chapter helped organize the event and bought eight rolls of duct tape in the colors of Haiti’s flag, according to chapter President Chris Guiney, a senior.

"We wanted to raise money for Haiti and we thought what would be the most effective way to energize the whole school and raise money at a very low cost," Guiney said. "I came up with this ridiculous idea and Mr. Badalament was sporting enough to do it."

Southeast Governor Demonstrates Active Citizenship
Governor of the Southeast Territory, T.S. Allen, demonstrated active citizenship recently when he met with several high school social Student Governor, TS Allenstudies department chairs in an effort to make other teachers and students aware of the Junior State of America program. He was subsequently featured on the "District Digest" TV program.
