Jake Heileman didn’t know what to expect when he packed his bags for
Beijing this summer, but when he returned to St. Thomas he knew he
hadn’t been disappointed.
The Ss. Peter and Paul High School 2010 graduate was one of three Virgin
Islands students who joined a group of 16 U.S. youths for three weeks
in China as part of the Junior Statesmen of America program. Although JSA typically focuses on government, law and politics, Heileman
said, the China trip “was more of a cultural immersion.” The students
took lessons in Chinese culture and history, as well as a crash course

While the loudmouths and troublemakers often steal the attention, one group of local teens is working hard to have a say in their world and put their generation in a positive light.
Articulate and bubbling with confidence, the 20 students from Charlotte Amalie High School, Ss. Peter and Paul, and Antilles School gathered in the CAHS library Saturday to learn and to practice how to participate in civic debate and discussion as part of a mini-conference of the nationwide Junior State of America. Two weeks ago, I had the opportunity to experience something unthinkable and unforgettable. I had the opportunity to see conservatives and liberals agree on something: education.
Pent-up passions and opinions of multiple leaders poured out in heated debates, all in a legitimate political atmosphere, earlier this month at the Junior Statesmen Foundation Texas Summer Institute on Politics and Presidential Leadership in Austin. That was my first thought when I jumped in the car after school Monday, flipped on the radio and heard, “Britain has a new prime minister” — but probably not for the reason you think.
Actually, my first response to Britain’s governmental woes was dismay: My sister told me a few days earlier that current British prime minister Gordon Brown had won re-election.
I wasn’t disappointed because I diligently follow British politics. Nor do I really condemn his recent “gaffe” (calling a supporter bigoted) or his part in the Iraq War.
No, I was bemoaning news of Gordon’s success because at my weekly Junior State of America meetings, we predicted candidate David Cameron would win and I didn’t want to lose my self-proclaimed prognostication powers. Read Full Article
