Students Ready to DebateBy: HOLLY SIAS/VOICE CORRESPONDENT
It was another mountain in life to climb. Instead of using his feet to hike, Isaiah Harper used his words.
At first he was nervous — just like many other members of the
Springfield High School Junior State of America organization preparing
for their debates at an upcoming mini convention.
“At first I was anxious. Then I felt like I had just accomplished
something huge in my life. I was high on life,” said Isaiah, a senior
at SHS.
Along with Isaiah, many members of JSA say they have felt this sense of
accomplishment and are ready to feel it again during Saturday’s
convention, hosted by the SHS and Sacred Heart-Griffin JSA members.
The convention, open to the public, will take place at the Illinois State Capitol from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday.
Chris Britt, political cartoonist at The State Journal-Register, will speak at the convention.
Every year, Springfield High’s JSA, part of a nationwide organization,
attends three conventions. Between Fall State, Winter Congress in
Washington D.C., and Spring State, SHS and SHG are collaborating to
host their own convention. Carrie McMenamin, a senior at Springfield High and the secretary of the
school’s JSA, says the idea of having a mini convention is to “promote
the idea of having a JSA at schools. It’s nice to give students the
opportunity to debate with other students at other schools.”
