Freehold Township High School To Host Political Forum
With the general elections only weeks away, students from the Freehold Township High School JSA Chapter are preparing for their first ever speakers gala, entitled "Election Exposition 2008." Open to high school students and the community at large, this event was designed by Freehold Junior Statesmen with the intent of educating everyone in the local community about the most pressing issues and candidates in the upcoming election. Taking place on October 7th, the gala will take place at Freehold Township High School and begin at 7:00 PM, with plans to conclude at 10:00 P.M. Admission is $1.00 per person and refreshments will be available.
Those attending the gala include Republican Assemblyman Declan O'Scanlon of the 12th legislative district, Barack Obama campaign representative Niki Shah, Libertarian senatorial candidate Jason Schuerer, and Republican House of Representatives candidate Alan Bateman. Members of the Frank Lautenberg, Rush Holt, and Dick Zimmer campaigns are also scheduled to appear. Each of the speakers will be given the opportunity to talk about their campaigns or the candidates that they represent followed by lively debate and well as a question and answer session.
Freehold Township's chapter has been active in the Junior Statesmen organization for twenty years and has held a reputation in New Jersey. Alex Buffer, State Assembly Representative for the chapter, notes " we [the executive board] really wanted to go above and beyond what the average chapter typically accomplishes – we have a reputation as one of the largest and most successful chapters in JSA's New Jersey Region, and truly just want to continue with that. This is a big anniversary for the chapter, too, so we figured that we would do something on this scale to celebrate." Boasting a yearly average membership of eighty five students, the chapter has been a model of leadership in the New Jersey Region. Its current Chapter President is Josh Lipson, a Junior from Marlboro, NJ. The chapter's teacher advisors are Stacy Nisman and Brian Grimes, both of whom teach history at Freehold Township.
"I'm hoping for record attendance for a chapter event. I've spoken to other Chapter Presidents from nearby schools, and they've been quite responsive to our invitation," remarks Lipson. "Hopefully, this is something we'll be able to put together year after year."
