by Daniil Karp  This July the Endowment for California Leadership, in collaboration with the Junior State of America, the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project, the California YMCA Youth and Government program and Youth Community Service carried out the first ever California Youth Summit (CYS) Summer Institute on the campus of Stanford University. For one week 80 high school students representing our 4 partner youth leadership development organizations came together to embark on an unprecedented crash course in effective civic engagement. Highlights of the week included presentations from Gary Hart, former California Secretary of Education, and Don Kennedy, President Emeritus of Stanford University as well as in-depth public relations training from professionals at Ogilvy Public Relations and creating and hosting a press conference that was captured on film.

Sixty students from across the country assembled in Southern California from August 9-12, 2010, to participate in JSA’s 34th annual Gene A. Burd Institute on Media and Politics. They spent the 4 days learning from prominent leaders about how the media has traditionally affected politics and how politicians and community organizers use and leverage the media for their own campaigns and causes, as well as the impact of new media such as social networking sites and blogs, on this traditional relationship.

 On August 10th, over a hundred students from across the country descended on the Princeton University campus, ready for a week full of studying some of the nation’s most important and current national security issues at JSF’s second annual Northeast Institute on Leadership and National Security. Highlights of the program included sessions with Clark Kent Ervin, former Inspector General of the US Department of Homeland Security; Ambassador Gabriela Shalev, the United Nations Ambassador from Israel; Hon. Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey Governor and former E.P.A and David Muir, anchor of ABC News’ World News Saturday.

 On August 5, 2010, fifty-seven aspiring leaders across the nation came to the Montezuma Leadership Summit in Los Gatos, California. All these leaders were chosen by their governors and came to represent their respective JSA states and territories in a weekend that they would never forget. Montezuma has been a tradition for over two decades and is a vital training ground for the Junior State of America’s future leadership. Montezuma is not only a place where tomorrow’s JSA leaders come to learn their true potential but also visit the place where JSA started. The summit was sponsored by the Montezuma Foundation which is made up of alumni and friends of the school where JSA was founded, the Montezuma Mountain School for Boys. |

 At the second Council of Governors meeting, the ten governors came together and selected the new national cabinet. Many students from across the across the country were nominated by their respective Junior State Governor and all had very impressive applications. Four dedicated JSA leaders will be working on a national level in conjunction
with the Council of Governors to fulfill the goals of the council as
well as bring JSAers a great 2010-2011 JSA year.
