Council of Governors Meets; Selects Convention Themes |
|
Tuesday, 26 May 2009 |
This past Memorial Day weekend in San Mateo, California, the national Council of Governors of the Junior State of America met to discuss this year’s goals. The Council decided on themes for the Fall and Spring State conventions, national cabinet and leadership positions, as well as the collective initiatives for the 75th anniversary of JSA.
After much consideration, the Governors came to an agreement on the convention themes that will be adopted nationwide this year. Fall State 2009 will be entitled “Beyond the Horizon: Assessing American Influence” and will focus on how global relations will have an impact on our nation’s international and domestic agendas. Spring State 2010 will be called “Life and Liberty: Reimagining the American Dream.” This event will ask students to consider how changing social, economic, and political policies affect the American way of life. Although each State has their own system of leadership, the Council of Governors maintains a National Cabinet to pursue nationwide initiatives. This year the COG cabinet will consist of a Treasurer, Junior Statement Editor, and the brand-new Council of Technology. The Treasurer will examine JSA finances and expenditures. The Editor the Junior Statement will publish an online and print publication three times a year including articles on national issues, individual state events, local chapter activities and student political commentary. The Council of Technology will help to maintain the national JSA web presence and will make recommendations to individual States regarding the improvement of their websites. The 75th anniversary of the Junior State of America provides a unique opportunity to expand the organization and educate students on the history and purpose of JSA. This year, the Council of Governors plans to develop State, regional and chapter activities to commemorate this historic landmark. Delegates can expect anniversary events at State conventions, alumni speaker galas, and a video tribute to Ernest A. Rogers, founder of JSA. As the weekend came to a close, the Council elected Liza Romanow, Pacific Northwest Governor, to be Council Secretary. Northeast State Governor, Dan Hoffmann, will serve on the Junior Statesman Foundation Board of Directors as this year’s student representative. All of the Governors look forward to an exciting, educational, and productive year in promotion of true statesmanship and “active citizenship.”
