Council of Governors seeks to "Inspire. Engage. Empower."
Monday, 09 June 2008
This past Memorial Day Weekend, the nine newly-elected Governors of the Junior State of America joined together in San Mateo, CA, to discuss and prepare for the upcoming year.  They shaped a number of initiatives and plans, established a set of broad goals, and even came up with a new motto to serve as a guide to better accomplish JSA's mission.

In each state, development will focus on three areas throughout the year: expansion, accessibility, and quality.  The increased use of technology on the national, state, and even regional level is expected to improve these areas while bringing JSA into an increasingly tech-based age.  State websites will now play a more crucial role in keeping everyone connected, and also serve to better advertise and promote JSA to people outside the organization, while online debate signups and registration have already taken a foothold in making conventions and debates better organized.  All the Governors will also now be writing blogs on roughly a weekly basis in order to keep their state's JSAers more connected with activities and developments on the national and state level.

The Council of Governors also came up with the motto "Inspire the world through knowledge.  Engage society through action.  Empower youth through democracy." to signify what they believe should be the driving force behind JSA.  To get individual opinions and viewpoints on this motto, read any one of the Governors' blogs from late May or early June.

The presidential election of 2008 is an amazing opportunity for JSAers all over the nation to get involved in campaigns and activism.  It is because of this that the Governors have decided to start an Election 2008 internet "hub" to get JSAers across the nation connected in their election-related activities.  Whether it be through blogging, contribution of suggestions for chapter activities, or the posing of questions to the candidates, the goal is to engage chapters and individual JSAers in the compilation of a bank of resources for anyone interested in the election, inside or outside of JSA.

The theme for Fall State 2008 is "From Promises to Policy: Making the Next Move," which lends itself perfectly to the time period in which it lands: only two or three weeks after the presidential election. Will the new president follow through and make the changes promised during the campaign season? Will action be taken to help solve the issues facing us today? These questions and more led to the Governors' formulation and consensus on the theme, and will be the focus of Fall State. A debate list is in the works at this writing, but should be finalized and released in the coming weeks.

Executive Director Jeff Harris described the nine as "possibly the most passionate group of Governors" he has worked with in his many years on the staff.  They hope to direct this individual passion towards making JSA a far-reaching, accessible, and high-quality organization over this next year, and hope that all of JSA will join them in this endeavor.
