This past week, over 80 students from throughout the country came together for the first ever Junior Statesmen Symposium on Energy and the Environment. Students heard from a wide variety of experts, legislative leaders and business interests.

Some highlights of the week include:
• Hearing the competing views of Assemblymember Chuck DeVore and State Treasurer Bill Lockyer on nuclear power. • JSA alum and head of the California Independent Petroleum Association, Rock Zierman provided insight into the oil industry’s perspective and offshore drilling. • Energy expert Ripu Malhotra from SRI provided a scientific analysis of what it would take to wean the world off of the more than 1 cubic mile of oil we use in a year. • Tesla Motors showed off their high end electric roadster that can do 0-60 in 3.9 seconds! Tesla is pushing technological boundaries by designing faster cars that also have a range of up to 240 miles between charges. They design and produce all their vehicles in the Bay Area. • The students also heard from San Francisco County supervisors Ross Mirkarimi and David Chiu about what the city has done to go green and the challenges it faces.
All in all it was an exciting week with a balance of hands on activities and speakers and students and staff left with a greater understanding of the politics involved in energy and the environment.
