On February 6th, over five hundred high school students convened in
Sacramento. They traveled from all over northern California, with one
thing in common: a love of politics. At JSA’s Winter Congress, students
are not only able to discuss the issues facing today’s society, but
they are able to introduce their own solutions. Each delegation
submitted bills aimed at solving problems such as banks that are too
big to fail, inequity in college admissions, and animal cruelty.

The
MW-ORV-SE Winter Congress that was to be held this weekend (Feb.10-14,
2010) at the Marriott Crystal Gateway Hotel in Arlington, Virginia has
been postponed and rescheduled for March 10-14, 2010. We consider
the safety of our students first. We have made this decision based on
current conditions in Washington, D.C., and the anticipated impact of
the coming winter storm.
Washington, D.C. and surrounding areas are currently under a severe
winter storm warning in the midst of recovering from this past
weekend’s blizzard. |

By: Justin Fletcher Two-hundred and twenty Northeast JSAers traveled to the chamber of the Supreme Court on Friday, February 5, 2010, during the NE Winter Congress to hear a speech from former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor. Justice O’Connor spoke about her history on the Court, the evolution of the Court, and students’ responsibilities to teach others about how government works, specifically to educate the youth.
Justice O’Connor served on the Court from 1981 to 2006 and was the first female Supreme Court Justice. During her speech, she expressed her deep experience and palpable spirit. Her sassiness was exposed through her responses to the students’ questions, including light-hearted “That’s just a dumb question!” or “Absolutely not!” As she clicked her heels and rolled her eyes, she answered all the questions posed to her directly. The delegates were quick to laugh when she made her spunky responses.

Top students and alumni from Southern California participated in JSA’s first ever Public Communication Bootcamp, featuring Richard Greene. One of the world’s leading speech and communication strategists, and author of Words that Shook the World, Greene taught the “five communication secrets of effective leaders” in a day-long workshop at Loyola Marymount University. As JSA’ers know, a powerful, persuasive speech must be much more dynamic than reading well-thought-out words. Greene dissected the elements of speech, teaching students how to most effectively connect with their audience, regardless of whether one has an audience of 2 or 2,000!

Martin Luther King Jr. once told us, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." On February 18th of this year, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, members of JSA Southeast Territory, as well as non-members from the Tampa area, decided to break the silence and discuss one important issue facing society today: the crisis in Afghanistan. Students from all around Florida joined together to discuss the problem through debates on issues such as the merits of colonization, education in Afghanistan, and the legitimacy of the Karzai government.
