Inside the Saudi Arabian and Israeli Embassies
Tuesday, 30 June 2009

Junior Statesmen Summer School students had the unique opportunity to visit the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and the Embassy of Israel in the same day.

At the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia, Mr. Tarik Allagany, the Information Supervisor at the Embassy addressed the students’ multifaceted questions regarding human rights, nuclear proliferation, homosexuality, Middle East peace, Shari’a law, and terrorism.  The presentation concluded with a lively, delightful fashion show of traditional Saudi clothing from different regions of the country, modeled by our very own student volunteers.

At the Embassy of Israel, Mr. Oren Anolik, the Counselor for Political Affairs, was impressed with the students’ knowledge of Israel, including its complex political concerns.  Although Mr. Anolik spent a considerable amount of time focusing on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he also discussed myriad other aspects of Israel, such as its thriving high-tech industry and its scarcity of fresh water.  After facing a long series of sophisticated, well-informed questions, Mr. Anolik compared the Junior Statesmen Summer School students to the White House press corps.

The juxtaposition of two vastly different presentations by representatives from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia and the Embassy of Israel illuminated the wide range of divergent views that exist in the Middle East and the difficulty of resolving historic conflicts.
