JSA Staff Participates in National Day of Service on MLK Day
Monday, 18 January 2010
JSF staff members in the Washington D.C. office spent Monday morning volunteering at a local library in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. and the National Day of Service.   Staff members worked in the Special Collections office of the Martin Luther King Jr. DC Public Library restoring antique children’s books.

Books were vacuumed, dusted, labeled, and sorted.  The book collection totals 20,000 volumes and includes both picture and chapter books with illustrations.  Some books were first editions, and Matthew Randazzo, JSF’s Chief Growth and Strategy Officer, found one book dating back to 1826.

“I gained a new appreciation for books from a different era,” said Elizabeth Ventura, JSA Texas and Mid-Atlantic Program Director.  The project showed the “importance of preserving educational materials for future generations.”

The book restoration project, which included 25 volunteers, was part of a larger initiative known as Serve DC.  Mayor Adrian Fenty and Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius were present to kick-off the day’s festivities.

Justin Mack, DC Student Services Coordinator, enjoyed being part of “a day on, not a day off.”  JSF hopes this volunteering experience will be the start of an office tradition and encourages all JSA students to find ways to support their local communities.
