Houston Mayor, Bill White, spoke to over 100 students at the Texas JSA Gulf Coast Regional Conference at Rice University on Saturday, October 20. Mayor White, who many speculate will run for Governor in 2010, praised the students for their interest in public service and encouraged them to participate in Houston politics.
Mayor White drew on his experiences in the public and private sector in order to address topics related to the conference theme, “An Eye for an Eye: Is American Justice Blind.” The mayor talked about the importance of the “third branch” of government in a democracy and asked students to study the “state of slavery” that existed in the Soviet controlled regions of Cold War Europe in order to understand the importance of a sound judicial system. The mayor encouraged the students to be active participants in city government and invited them to speak at city council meetings where he promised their concerns would be taken seriously. Upon receiving a Junior State mug from Texas JSA Lieutenant Governor Katherine Kelly at the conclusion of his speech, the mayor praised the students for living up to the Junior State motto “Democracy is Not a Spectator Sport.” |
