The Junior Statesmen chapter at St. Johns School in Houston, Texas amazes anyone that has crossed paths with them. St. John’s has always had a strong chapter with high attendance at conventions. This year has definitely not been different. With the end of the year nearing, the St. John’s chapter is far from slowing down. Not only is the St. John’s chapter very active in JSA within their own chapter, there are a handful of members who are on the Texas State cabinet. The Lieutenant Governor of Texas JSA is a very active member of the St. John’s chapter, as well. They hold bi-monthly meetings which usually include discussing upcoming events, talking about current events, or holding some sort of thought talk or debate. Recently, St. John’s has been mainly preparing for the Spring State convention which will be held on April 12-13 in Houston, TX. The St. John’s chapter plans on bringing about 23 members to this convention. Any chapter who has attended a convention with the St. John’s chapter will agree that they bring great debaters and very interesting opinions, and it is a joy to have them there. On March 29th, St. Johns held a successful mini-convention. More than forty people attended from surrounding Houston schools. This convention was a simplified version of a normal convention. The theme, “New voices, New Decisions,” was chosen to highlight the principle that the voices of young people do matter. This mini-con included great debates and thought talks, a very interesting quiz bowl, and an even better keynote speaker. This chapter obviously deserves to be “Chapter of the Week.” They have done a wonderful job contributing to this organization, and they have given many students the opportunity to express their opinions and become active in the political world. This chapter has been a huge asset to Texas JSA as well as the nationwide organization. |
