When people hear the name Staten Island Tech they assume that such a school focuses all its efforts on teaching the students about computers and engineering. That is not the case as can be seen by the political awareness of the members of Tech JSA. Currently the chapter has about fifty tax paid members. Staten Island Tech usually has one of the bigger delegations at events throughout the Empire Constitution Region and Northeast State. At Fall State 2007 in Boston Massachusetts, Staten Island Tech brought home 11 best speakers awards. This set a chapter record for most awards brought home at a single event. Recently at Winter Congress 2008 Tech got two bills passed through full committees, another chapter record. This year Tech has two members of its chapter on cabinet and two members running for office positions. It can be said that Staten Island Technical High School is one of the rising stars of the NES. Staten Island Tech’s chapter considers itself one big, happy family. They have meetings every Tuesday after school to discuss local and national politics. Last year, Irina Denisenko, a member of the chapter decided to attend JSA summer school. The chapter dedicated themselves entirely to having bake sales and selling lollypops in order to raise money for her. This chapter believes in teamwork, cooperation, and having a good time. One reason for the strength of the chapter is the special bond that the members share with one another. In December of 2007 Staten Island Tech hosted its annual minicon. Tech’s chapter can proudly claim that this event was the first minicon in the ECR for the school year. The theme for the minicon was philosophy and the debate resolutions were unique quotes from influential people in popular culture. Tech even invited members of the Young Republicans of Staten Island to attend the minicon and give a keynote speech. Not only is Staten Island Tech deeply invested in the Junior Statesmen of America, but all members are well rounded and involved in other aspects of the school and community. Chapter President Steven Ballew is part of the Young Republicans of Staten Island and assisted in the reelection campaign of District Attorney Dan Donovan. Andrew Callahan is an Eagle Scout and Irina Denisenko is the Vice President of Tech’s Do Something Club. Other members are part of the schools student government. All members cherish the Junior Statesmen of America, and view the Staten Island Tech chapter as their loving family.
