Thomas Jefferson High School Chapter of the Week
Tuesday, 26 February 2008

The Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is oriented a bit more towards technological areas of study, but despite its lengthy and hi-tech title, it is nonetheless one of the strongest centers for politics and discussion for high school students in Virginia.

The Jefferson Junior State of America Chapter was founded a few years ago by a group of students looking for a place to apply their knowledge and passion for American government, politics, and current events. In a school where so much emphasis is placed on science and math, the students at Jefferson find it refreshing and educational to debate issues not often discussed in class. Jefferson's students are among the most passionate and dedicated in the state – it is the source of their strength as a chapter. For instance, although the founding students encountered difficultly when searching for a teacher/advisor, they were able to persevere and eventually establish an active chapter on all levels of the Junior State. The chapter's three gavels and one successful bill from the Mid-Atlantic State's Winter Congress convention serve as a testament to their ability to succeed.

Students from Thomas Jefferson HSST plan to attend the upcoming Mid-Atlantic Spring State convention as well as the Junior Statesmen Foundation's summer programs. They are ready and willing to become more involved in what they have found to be one of the best and most entertaining experiences that is the Junior State of America.
