Junior Statesmen Attend Democratic National Convention

Junior Statesmen from across the nation and around the world gathered in Denver to witness history firsthand at the Democratic National Convention. Students were given the opportunity to meet and interact with the foremost politicians of this era. They mixed and mingled with delegates from their various states, state party leaders, activists, and political celebrities. Students experienced politics firsthand as they attended numerous state breakfasts and caucuses hosted and attended by renowned speakers such as former First Lady and presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, DNC Chairman Howard Dean, and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

California Symposium Students Meet with Lawmakers

Symposium on California Politics and Government

GaramendiSecretary Long

Well the first day of the California Symposium went off without a hitch
and the students had a great time. All of the speakers commented on
the quality of the questions and were impressed by the knowledge of
the students. Some of today's highlights includes hearing about the
"gaywashing" of PG & E from Assemblyman Mark Leno, the importance of budget reform from Lt. Governor John Garamendi and the myriad of problems facing our schools from Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell and Secretary of Education David Long. The state budget was on everybody's mind, but solutions did not seem forthcoming at this time. Maybe Controller Chiang will be able to shed some light on the situation tomorrow!
