The Junior Statesmen Summer School has a premier Speakers Program. It is frequented by some of the greatest minds and most prominent people in America. This year, students from the Yale Summer School visited New York City and heard from speakers including Katie Couric, Geraldine Ferraro, Jeffery Delaurentis, Brian Williams, and Ann Veneman. Attending Speakers Day was both a wonderful and unique experience for students and staff alike. Students were given the opportunity to interact, question, and discuss with these well-known and respected speakers.
Katie Couric spoke to students immediately following an interview with John McCain. Couric gave students the opportunity to ask her a myraid of questions from a variety of topics and answered in a truthful and honest manner.
Geraldine Ferraro was a favorite speaker among the students; both funny and informative, she was most of all, direct. Rather than giving the students diplomatic or politically correct answers, Ferraro was straightfoward and honest, even to the point of revealing a personal bias. This candid and intimate session gave Yale summer school students a refreshing perspecive on politics.
Students also went to the United Nations and we in a conference room where U.N. debates take place. When asking questions, students were allowed to simulate UN Delegates and were allowed to use the microphones attached to the desks. After the U.N. speakers, students went to South Street Seaport, where they ate dinner and shopped by the ocean. It was the perfect way to end a day filled with interesting conversation and ideas. Speakers Day was definitely a highlight of the summer school experience.
