JSA Mourns Death of Former LBJ School of Public Affairs Dean: Elspeth Rostow
Monday, 10 December 2007

According to the Sunday, December 9, 2007 issue of The Austin American Statesmen former University of Texas dean and advisor to President Reagan, Elspeth Rostow, has passed away.  Many JSA symposium graduates remember Ms. Rostow's speeches fondly, she was a regular symposium speaker and was always willing to share with the delegates who unique experiences in both politics and academia.

In the eighties, Ms. Rostow served as a member of the President's Advisory Committee for Trade Negotiations as well as on the President's Commission for a National Agenda.  In 1987, President Reagan appointed her to the Board of the United States Institute for Peace, which she later chaired.

This year Rostow was the Stiles Professor Emeritus in American Studies and a government professor at University of Texas.  Students at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, where she was dean from 1977 to 1983, voted earlier this year to name her the professor "Most Committed to the LBJ School."  Rostow was also once dean of UT's Division of General and Comparative Studies.

Ms. Rostow was a dynamic speaker whose life experiences and achievements were inspirational.  Texas JSA symposium should be honored to have heard from such an accomplished woman.

An online tribute to Ms. Rostow is located here on the Austin American Statesmen's website.
