The Chapter of the Week for this week is none other than The Woodlands College Park High School from the Woodlands, Texas. Increasing their tax-paid count to 37 members this year, The Woodlands College Park is averaging about 25 members at each of their meetings held every two weeks. Activities at these meetings include thought talks on issues like illegal immigration, capital punishment, and war in Iraq. In addition the chapter holds traditional JSA-style debates and the ever popular “speed chess” style of debate when possible. So far this year, The Woodlands College Park has attended the GCR Fall Regional and Fall State, where the chapter earned two “Best Speaker” awards! They plan on attending Winter Congress, Texas’ Presidential Nominating Convention, and Spring State. |

The Naperville North Chapter has been and continues to be one of the largest and strongest chapters in the Midwest State since its founding in 2000. More than 40 members strong, the chapter members are an extremely tight-knit group, even outside the confines of JSA meetings and events. Many members from Naperville feel a close bond with their fellow JSAers and have come to think of JSA as a second family of-sorts. This feeling of family is one of the many reasons why Naperville North continues to be successful in JSA debates and in attending JSA conventions. While some larger chapters often have difficulty including all members, both old and new alike, Naperville is much the opposite. Veteran JSA members and the chapter leadership do their best to get everyone involved; be it through impromptu competitions, traditional debates, thought talks, and yes, even musical debates, everyone has a great time and friendships are quickly formed. Naperville's leaders have made it a goal for the club to be as inclusive and open-minded as possible. Judging by their popular meetings and strong attendance at convention, Naperville's leaders seem to be doing a fine job. As with any JSA chapter, members agree to disagree on various issues and topics. However, the very tight-knit members of JSA have found one issue that they all agree upon: freedom for the Tibetan people. This topic if one of particular interest in the Naperville Chapter, one that encourages them to debate intensely and with passion. While Naperville's members may be skilled orators and debaters, they also play a mean game of poker, a favorite past time of this distinct Midwest chapter. |

By Cory Dimke As I walked onto the campus of Georgetown University I was in awe of the beauty and feel of intelligence which was a complete 180 from the view I have been reluctant to call astonishing at JW Mitchell High School. As I stood on Healy Lawn and tried to locate my dorm, I knew I would be ready for the challenges set ahead. |
