The Alliance Smidt Chapter of the Junior State of America met before the media with former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa on March 15 to introduce and add student voice to his proposed first-ever California Student Bill of Rights. JSA members Dafne Gonzalez and Brady Carlos spoke passionately as opening speakers about their own experience accessing quality education in their neighborhoods, before introducing Mayor Villaraigosa.
During the hour-long session with Mayor Villaraigosa (now a candidate for Governor of California), JSA members had an opportunity to question the former mayor on aspects of the Bill of Rights draft. Members also broached subjects such as the inclusion of immigrants who arrived as children, commonly called Dreamers, mental health, accountability, and higher teacher pay to keep quality teachers.
According to Dafne Gonzalez, “We are excited to be a part of Mr. Villaraigosa’s Student Bill of Rights because California needs to guarantee more than just an education; it needs to guarantee a quality education.”
