Students from the U.S. Territories (American Samoa, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands) and Freely Associated States (Federated States of Micronesia, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Republic of Palau) will learn important 21st Century leadership skills at the Junior State of America (JSA) Summer School. JSA has been awarded a $400,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Interior to bring students from these Insular Areas to participate in JSA Summer Programs in 2019.
This year, it will support 55-65 students attending a one-week prep program in July at Stanford and Princeton universities.
“Students from the Insular Areas will have the opportunity to engage with their peers from around the world in an intensive three-week college-level program at some of America’s elite universities,” said Ed Banayat, Senior Program Director, U.S. Territories & Freely Associated States. “We have seen the tremendous impact this experience has on the students when they return to their communities. The students leave with life-changing experiences, which prepares them for active participation in American style democracy.”
JSA has been partnering with the Department of Interior for more than 27 years. During the partnership, more than 2,200 students from the U.S. Territories & Freely Associated States have participated in JSA Summer Schools.
